Halloween 2010 Part One: Wonderwoman!

The days are getting cooler and the sound of rustling leaves tells me fall has arrived.  I prefer the heat and humidity of summer, but it is my fiance's favorite season.  I do however look forward to Halloween and the fun of finding inspiration for creating a new and original costumes.

I will be wearing my old standby this year, Wonderwoman, a costume I toiled over one year ago and worth every hour of work I put into it.

The only part I am missing is the iconic red boots, but being creative and frugal, I would rather make boots than buy them.  I started with red knee socks available at the local Ardene store for $5.  The last time I set foot in that store I was deciding between a 3-for-$10 pair of earrings and a new Smashing Pumpkins CD over at Sam's!  I also thought I looked cooler wearing a hideous plaid shirt because Eddie Vedder wore them and then people would think I was all 'grunge-y'.  Would it still be cool to wear my Doc Martens with the rainbow stitching and the rainbow laces - too much?

The plan for the socks is that I will wear my black pumps and pull the sock over the pump shoe, sticking the pointy heel out through a hole I cleverly punctured through the heel of the sock.  I plan to cover the 3-inch heel with red electric tape, because I'm a superhero and picky.  The sock makes walking slippery, so a carefully placed piece of duct tape will make for better traction- voila! Wonderwoman boots!

They are not quite authentic yet as her boots have a white stripe up the center and around the top edge. I am still working on that detail.  I may have to glue the stripes on before I go partying since the stretchy sock material would be nearly impossible to sew.

My costume is actually a no-brainer this year, but my fiance's is turning out to be a bit of work.  We recently watched Gangs of New York again and thought Daniel Day Lewis' rendition of Bill the Butcher is quite fetching and being that he is a recognizable movie character, it would make an awesome Halloween costume.  He is afterall a ruthless murderer and menacing manipulator and I will show how we made his costume in Part Two!
